OXY 500
**OXY 500 (Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride)** **Composition (per gram):** – Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride ………………
500 mg **Pharmacological Properties:** Oxytetracycline belongs to the tetracycline group and acts as an antibiotic against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as *Bordetella*, *Bacillus*, *Corynebacterium*, *Pasteurella*, *Campylobacter*, *Staphylococcus*, *Haemophilus*, *Escherichia coli*, *Salmonella*, *Mycoplasma*, *Rickettsia*, and *Chlamydia*.
Oxytetracycline works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and is primarily excreted in urine, with lesser amounts in bile and the milk of lactating animals.
**Indications for Use:** Used for the treatment and prevention of systemic, respiratory, and intestinal diseases in calves, lambs, and poultry (meat-producing poultry) caused by bacteria sensitive to oxytetracycline, if the presence of the disease is confirmed in the group.
**Contraindications:** Not to be used in cases of hypersensitivity to oxytetracycline or any other tetracycline compounds.
Not for use in cases of known bacterial resistance to oxytetracycline.
**Interactions with Other Drugs:** Divalent or trivalent elements (such as magnesium, iron, aluminum, calcium) can form complexes with tetracyclines, reducing antibiotic absorption.
Tetracyclines should not be used with antacids or vitamin or mineral products containing aluminum, as they may form insoluble complexes and reduce drug efficacy.
**Side Effects:** Discoloration of teeth in young animals, hypersensitivity reactions, gastrointestinal disturbances, and, in rare cases, photosensitivity or allergic reactions.
**Dosage and Administration:** Administer orally.
The dosage depends on the clinical and physiological condition of the animal, and the dosage should be adjusted based on the animal’s water intake.
The recommended dosages are as follows: – **Calves and Lambs:** 1 gram of oxytetracycline per 25-50 kg of body weight twice daily for 3-5 days.
– **Poultry:** 10 mg of oxytetracycline per kg of body weight daily for 3-5 consecutive days.
**Special Precautions for Use:** This powder should be dissolved in water before use.
The use of the product should be based on a sensitivity test of the isolated bacteria.
The drug should not be used in animals with poor appetite or altered drinking patterns.
**Withdrawal Period:** – **For Meat:** – Calves and Lambs: 8 days.
– Poultry: 6 days.
– **For Eggs:** – Not for use in laying hens producing eggs for human consumption.
